How to Research Potential Publishers

Wondering how to start thinking about finding a publisher for your book? Checking with colleagues and mentors about their experiences is a good first step. But it’s also helpful to cast a wider net. I highly recommend these resources rom the American Association for University Presses.
The AAUP offers a subject matrix, so you can see all the university presses publishing in your field, as well as links to presses, and a forum for specific questions. All this may feel a bit overwhelming, of course. So I encourage my clients to set aside an hour or two a week for doing this reading and reviewing of how various presses describe their interests and books they’ve recently published. Perhaps the end of the day on Fridays, for instance, could be your regular time to explore these resources and take notes. After a month or two, you will likely find yourself having a much stronger sense of what the landscape of scholarly book publishing is like today and what presses may be good fits for your project.
